Piggy-Back Extruders For 11-Layer Blown Film
Time: 2008-12-08
Brampton Engineering Inc., Brampton, Ont., came up with a novel approach to reduce the footprint of its first 11-layer blown film line, which shipped in April. With up to 10 layers, there was enough room for all the extruder adapters around Brampton’s stacked SCD (Streamlined Coex Die) without excessive flow distances. But 11 extruders were too many for a radial arrangement, so Brampton piggybacked extruders, shown here without covers in a testing bay. The layout has two piggyback extruder pairs plus seven normal models. Elevating two extruders has a further advantage in producing barrier films with Brampton’s side fed die, in which each layer is fed in at different heights, rather than all being fed from the bottom. The new arrangement allows straighter, shorter adapters for barrier layers.
